Okay, after reading through Chapter 16 I am no longer convinced that Chris had a death wish; however, I do believe he was foolish and naive. Krakauer is able to help readers understand Chris better since he can relate to him through shared personality traits...something I don't think just any writer could have done. It seems the relationships that both the author and Chris had with their fathers had a strong impact on the lives of both young men, making them fiercely determined to prove their independence at any cost.
I am with you! Every time I read this book, my feelings about Chris change repeatedly. I agree that I do not think anyone other than Jon Krakauer could have written this book and had it work so well.
